Research

Past Attempts

One Bed and Breakfast in Cape May, the Gingerbread House, one guest commented that it was a “lovely home but an average stay.” She said that the bathrooms were way too small. She also said that even though each room had one air condition vent, the common areas were very hot and sticky (Gingerbread House: Traveler).

The Columbia House which is also a Bed and Breakfast in Cape May has many good reviews but one customer complained about the view in the room. The expected view was definitely not the view the customer had. This customer also complained about the décor of the entire interior of the bed and breakfast because it was very Victorian and not modern enough. Another customer also complained about the décor in the house, and that the bathroom was a bit small. Another customer, a senior citizen, complained that the climb to the third floor was rather difficult (Columbia).

A customer who stayed at the Montreal Inn in Cape May complained that if one took away the ocean and beach view, the Bed and Breakfast is disgusting. (Refer to Figure 1.6) The location was key and pleasant, but the actually interior was not nice at all. Another customer complained that the Bed and Breakfast was not sanitary and that it was very “dark and musty.” A third customer was also deceived about where she was staying because she did not have a full view of the ocean. This customer also said it was dark and dusty inside and that it was not sanitary at all. She said that the bathroom was also very small, almost like a hole in the wall. A fourth customer said that the rooms were very dark and that the walls were almost paper thin, allowing them to hear everything around them. She said there was also no fan in any part of the room (Montreal).

One customer complained about the SeaVilla Bed and Breakfast in Cape May. (Refer to Figure 1.7) The customer said it was dark and the linens and curtain were old fashioned with dirt on them. The customer also said there was no air conditioner. A second customer complained that the SeaVilla had too many Victorian decorations and that the Bed and Breakfast turned her off from Victorian décor. A third customer complained and said there was only one bath on each floor and two baths outside (The Seavilla).

Analyzing the comments about different Bed and Breakfasts in the area, it helps to see that many comments were very similar amongst different Bed and Breakfasts in Cape May. The Seven Treasures: Bed and Breakfast, had a modern look with a great location and bright. One bathroom per room is built that is large enough to accommodate anyone. Each room has an ocean view. There are stairs and ramps for those who have difficulty using the stairs.

Extended Research

From analyzing the complaints about current bed and breakfasts and doing some research, one of the most important elements to interior design is color. Color must always match the fabric in the room in some sort of way. Colors always evoke some sort of emotion from the person looking at them, therefore certain colors should be used in certain areas. For example, because a bathroom and bedroom is a peaceful and calming space, colors such as blue or green may be useful. Yellows and reds evoke more of energetic mood; such colors

might be used for a living room. Complimentary colors, colors opposite each other on the color wheel go very well together like purple and yellow. Analogous colors, colors next to each other on the color wheel also complement each other nicely. Triad colors are also nicely together, colors that form a triangle on the color wheel (Basics).

Because this Bed and Breakfast has more of a modern look to it than Victorian, it is paramount to know what styles represent the contemporary style. Clean, smooth, and an uncluttered style gives more of the contemporary feel. Whites, creams, and darker shades gives a very modern look, along with some accents of bright color coming from cushions, paintings, etc. Some key textures include metal, polished wood, and cool tile (Contemporary).

On Friday, October 3, I visited the Hepburn House in Freehold, NJ. Here, one of the managers, Paul Noone, and owner, Susan Berryman, took me around to three floors and showed two of the bedrooms, the dining room, and a sitting room. The style of this Bed and Breakfast is modern, but traditional. The Bed and Breakfast is used by many such as businessmen, families, and hosts bridal showers, baby showers, weddings, etc.

A very small detail that Mr. Noone pointed out to me was that on each floor, there was a closet full of cleaning products, bath towels, and a refrigerator with soda and water and that guests can utilize. He said this was a very important feature that I should make sure I pay attention to for my Bed and Breakfast. He said the more I pay attention to detail, the more the guests feel at home.

Paul Noone and Susan Berryman said that were very interested in my project and they If i needed help with anything, they would be available. Seeing this Bed and Breakfast helpr me put my plans into perspective.
